“The Copyright Act gives all authors a set of rights that only they may exercise. These include the right to make copies, to prepare derivative works, to publicly distribute, display and perform the work, and in the case of digital sound recordings, to perform the works over a digital network(Shaffer).” This was a quote that I felt really combined the two articles and grasped the main arguments. This allows the reader to understand the different issues surrounding copyright and what people have free access to. For me, it was important to see all of the different ways copyright is allowed and them being put together makes more sense. Copyright is a very important notion to be aware of because many students do not know the parameters surrounding it and can get themselves into trouble. As a teacher, I will need to make sure my students understand copyright and plagiarism so they do not steal anything online.

“Sometimes licenses are purchased and sometimes they are given freely by the creator (Collister).” One question this brought up for me was how do licenses get distributed to certain people and how do people register for a license. Is it easy for someone like me to randomly purchase a license or are there certain hoops to jump through? I think in terms of licensing and for someone who wants to be a creator, there needs to be more of a clear outline. A creator should understand all the terms of licenses and how to apply for one. I would assume I need to learn a little more about this prior to becoming a teacher, just in case.

“Fair use law is fluid, and hard for non-lawyers (and most non-IP lawyers, and even some IP lawyers!) to parse (Shaffer).” The whole plan of fair use law seems difficult because how can someone really justify if it is fair use law. This is why I have had such a hard time understanding the whole concept of copyright. This will be something I definitely need to do more research on as I continue to grow as a teacher. Fair use law does not make a lot of sense and I think if I was a lawyer I would have a hard time explaining it.
