In the field of history it is very common for people to get bored if they do not have a real interest. The use of digital media enables people to engage on a whole new level. With digital media different audiences can find a piece of information and work with it to find out where it happened, what the landscape was, what the popular was of that location, etc. This can be really beneficial to History teachers because not every student is going to be interested in the same thing, and this allows for students to take control of their learning and research specifically want they want to learn.

This quote raised questions for me because I wonder how these data visualizations have been utilized in ways other than just for New York Times viewer. It made me curious what the viewers were using the information and if they are educating people in a way. For example, if a teacher was to subscribe to the NYT and allowed their students to use the digital media. This is also something that a whole school system could do and it seems like it could be a valuable learning tool.

The NYT asks readers to plot characters on axis from beautiful to ugly, evil to good. Then, you can see what the aggregate of all data collected from all readers is.” Source: Lauren. “The 34 Best Interactive Data Visualizations from the New York Times.” Dolphins, February 28, 2018.

I felt like this was an interesting piece of digital media that could be used in many different ways. I understand focusing on rating characters is a fun and lighthearted way to interact with the NYT audience, but I also think it could be useful to give a different example of how it could be used. For example, it could be used to find out where people land on the political spectrum or how much information people think they know about cold war. This is a piece of media that could be expanded upon much more.
