Assignment Pacing Schedule

The following is a suggested pacing for assignments due this semester. Deadlines are marked as “Due.”


DIGITAL TOOL for INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH HISTORY PROJECT (with LESSON PLAN)

  • W01 >> Begin thinking about which three topics you will choose from to research
  • W02 >> Continue researching topics for your research; develop a ranked list of three topics
  • W03 >> Continue research. Focus on secondary sources from academic journals and/or books by historians who are experts on your selected topic. Save these in your Zotero library.
    • Due by Jan 28: Post on AsULearn a Google Doc (hyperlinked) with the three topics – ranked – for your Digital Tool with Lesson/Presentation Plan. For each topic, provide …
      • Lesson/Presentation working title and main learning objective
      • An Inquiry and two (2) interdisciplinary standards objective (NC Standards for 9-12 Social Studies)
      • A brief description of what a summative (i.e. final) assessment would entail for your students or audience
  • W04 >> Due by Feb 6: Post on AsULearn a list of ten (10) academic secondary sources from history journals and books on your topic. Generate the Bibliography from your Zotero library in Chicago Style – full note. Continue researching on your topic, and begin researching relevant primary sources as well. (Create a separate subcollection in your Zotero library).
  • W05 >> Due by Feb 13: Post on AsULearn an Annotated Bibliography of the five (5) key secondary sources. Also submit:
    • An expanded list of now 20 secondary sources (academic works by historians)
    • One-sentence descriptions of ten (10) primary sources – hyperlinked to where they are published online.
  • W06 >> Work on creating your digital product(s) and the accompanying lesson or presentation plan
  • W07 >> Due by Feb 25 26: Submit on AsULearn your lesson/presentation plan, which will include links to your digital product(s).

The Omeka Project (RESEARCHING, COLLECTING, AND ARCHIVING HISTORY ONLINE)

  • W04 >> — Individual secondary source research on possible topic(s).
  • W05 >> — Individual secondary source research on possible topic(s).
  • W06 >> — Individual secondary source research on possible topic(s). Discuss group topic and where your research might fit best.
  • W07 >> — Individual research on defined topic(s). Now expand to possible primary sources.
  • W08 >> — Add sources (primary and secondary) to subcollection for your group Zotero library. Brainstorm possible collections to organize items in the Omeka site.
  • W09 >> Spring Break!
  • W10 >> Set-up Omeka.net site. Create collections pages. Finalize/select topic by editing folder name in Zotero Group Library.

    • Due by March 20: Curate your primary and secondary sources in your Zotero sub-folder. Ensure each item’s metadata (and any notes and/or tags you added) are correct. In class, post your first item in the Omeka site with accurate metadata, tagging, file (hi-res image), and description.
  • W11 >> Lab Week
    • Group meets to discuss next steps (descriptions of collections, About page, website design choices, possible Exhibit builder approach, lesson plan). Discuss roles for the group part of the assignment.
    • Due by March 27: Each student submits the five (5) fully-curated items. Post your first item in the Omeka site with accurate metadata, tagging, file (hi-res image), and description.
  • W12 >> Lab Week. Continue adding items individually. As a group, take time to develop an About page, collections descriptions, and review each other’s collections and items.
    • Due by April 3: Each student submits the five (5) fully-curated items.
  • W13 >> Due on April 10: Each group presents a 10-minute “poster session” presentation of Omeka Site 1.0 three times. Students share presentation duties; non-presenters rotate around the room to listen to the other 10 min. presentations.
    • Due by April 10 >> All 10 items per student, complete metadata and image, inside their collection.
  • W14 >> Group work on Omeka site 2.0 with feedback from poster sessions.
    • Group works on a lesson plan of how the website can be used in a 60 min activity with a specific audience in mind.
  • W15 >> Due by April 24: The final version of the Omeka Site, and the group lesson plan.
  • W16 >> None (LDOC) / Last day to submit the group lesson plan.

READING ANALYSIS: Zotero

You will submit seven (7) Zotero Notes this semester. Focus on one reading and become an expert for the class discussions. [Note: you should still read, or at least browse, the other reading(s)]. Notes will be posted in the HIS 3630 group library by the indicated week.

  • The main Zotero Group Library for HIS 36360 THNM has a series of notes under “Directions”: a) step-by-step guidelines for the assignment; b) a readings analysis template (copy it, paste it in your note for the selected reading, and replace the fields in the template with your analysis for each reading selection); c) a sample.
  • Aim to submit 4 notes by the midterm, and the final 3 notes by the end of the semester. However, you can finish early.
  • Due by April 17: Zotero Notes Assignments Self-Evaluation Sheet.

Final Exam

Due by the end of the exam period: Thursday MAY 8, 8am-10:30am
